We’re back again with a fresh post for The Clutch Company’s new blog. The topic today is a question we’re always receiving from clients in our hometown of Bristol: when exactly should I be investing in clutch replacement?
But if you’re more interested in discussing other aspects of what we do with the team – for example clutch repairs or gearbox replacement – don’t hesitate to give us a call on 07974 023 677 or 01275 832 100. Our friendly clutch specialists are always happy to provide expert advice and assistance.
As with most automotive components, there’s no rule that’s set in stone! It’s really down to the way you drive. The majority of clutches are designed to last around 60,000 miles. Some Bristol motorists have been known to require clutch replacement after just 30,000, while others can easily double the intended lifespan of their clutch via careful driving and due to the routes they typically take; what we mean by the latter point is that driving along uncongested motorways is very easy on the clutch, while stop-start driving every day in a busy city centre can cause excess wear and tear.
But what do we mean by careful driving? The main things you should be doing are: a) only using the clutch when necessary; use the handbrake where appropriate or put your vehicle in neutral. b) don’t ride the clutch; keep it fully engaged or depressed when driving. c) avoid acceleration prior to the gear engaging. We also recommend Bristol motorists invest in regular servicing and essential clutch repairs as and when required. This will significantly reduce the need for early clutch replacement.
How do you know when clutch replacement is required? There are a number of symptoms of damage featured on our clutch repair page. Some of the more serious ones prove unrepairable, and to keep you and fellow Bristol motorists safe on its roads we’ll recommend replacement.
