As our name might suggest, The Clutch Company serves as Bristol’s local specialist for clutch repair and clutch replacement. We have the expertise required to provide speedy diagnostics and a fast turnaround time on the work itself, beating out generic “Jack of all trades” garages. But don’t expect to pay more for a quality service, we keep our prices distinctly competitive, minimising both the stress and expense typically associated with clutch failure.
We’re also a local and independent alternative to national chains, which can’t offer the high standard of customer service that we offer the Bishopsworth, Hengrove, Knowle and Keynsham areas:, e.g: inclusive breakdown recovery, drop-off service, and courtesy car (subject to availability). A Good Garage Scheme certified company, we use high quality parts in all of our clutch repairs and clutch replacement – helping you get back on the road, safely.
My clutch is noisy while engaging and disengaging.
This is typically an issue with the clutch fork, which acts as a release mechanism. The noise could be simply down to the lubricant that keeps everything working seamlessly drying out. Other causes for squeaking or clunking noises include faults with cables, rods and/or a particular connection. We recommend our Bishopsworth, Hengrove, Knowle and Keynsham clients visit us immediately for diagnostics; leaving the issue could cause the clutch to begin to wear down, meaning that clutch repairs are no longer enough and you need a full-fledged clutch replacement.
My clutch shudders while accelerating.
If you feel your clutch pedal vibrating under your foot while accelerating, this signals that the clutch disc is struggling to grip onto the flywheel. There are a number of faults that could cause this symptom, including: your clutch disc’s lining wearing out or burning, oil contamination, a blazed clutch disc, a warped or badly worn flywheel (or pressure plate), a worn or damaged pilot bearing, or perhaps a diaphragm spring that’s weakened.
After pressing my clutch, it sticks to the floor.
This typically signals an issue with either the linkage or release bearing. We can check that the springs in the linkage are functioning correctly, and that said bearing hasn’t worn out or sustained damage. Fixing either issue falls under clutch repair, meaning you can avoid the need for a complete clutch replacement.
My clutch feels loose/spongy under foot.
Both a damaged/worn release bearing or clutch fork can cause this problem; it’s one of the most common issues our Bristol clients visit us with. Another cause is a failed pressure plate diaphragm spring, or if you have a hydraulic clutch release then: air in the system, low fluid, a leaking hose/pipe, loose connection, compromised centre valve seal in master cylinder, or piston primary seal failure.
My clutch is hard to press down.
Again, usually a release mechanism issue due to a sticking or binding pedal linkage, cable, cross shaft or pivot ball (if you have a mechanical clutch). Bishopsworth, Hengrove, Knowle and Keynsham motorists whose vehicles feature hydraulic clutches may be experiencing a fault with a worn seal, or perhaps a blockage. Don’t put off visiting us for clutch repairs is this a problem you’re suffering, as you may end up needing a clutch replacement when the problem worsens and it becomes entirely unusable.
I’m hearing a grinding noise while in neutral.
Typically, this is a worn out input shaft bearing, which can easily be replaced; whirring noises can also indicate that this is the issue you’re suffering.
My clutch grinds but when shifting gears.
This usually points to the clutch disc remaining engaged when it should be disengaged. As with many clutch related issues we deal with at our Bristol garage, this requires investigation as it could be one of any number of problems, e.g: a malfunctioning pressure plate, broken bearing, or faulty release mechanism. With hydraulic systems: a failure with the clutch master cylinder, low fluid/lubricant, excess of air in the system or even a problem with the clutch pedal itself.
I can’t get my transmission into gear!
If you can’t get in or out of certain gears/reverse, you may be experiencing a fault with your linkage system, or your clutch plate may be warped or damaged. In the case of hydraulic systems, it could be either the master or slave cylinders, or perhaps even faults with both simultaneously.
Keep in mind if you can’t bring your vehicle to us, we provide a pick up and drop off clutch repairs and clutch replacement service for clients all throughout Bristol – including Bishopsworth, Hengrove, Knowle and Keynsham.
